Artist’s Statement – Canadian Village Reflections

Margaret J Grant

I create art that elicits a sense of joy, humour and a recognition of time and place. I draw upon mental snapshots that help me to tell a story, and express a unique vision of village life, whether it is a community within an urban setting or a country town. I want my art to be quirky, whimsical, expressive, and relatable.

The paintings of downtown Ottawa give a flowing, misty and somewhat magical effect on these cityscapes. With ‘Crooked Town’, I discovered an illustrative style and a love for depicting villages imaginatively. The rest of the paintings progress into a vivid, stylized town series.
